Traktor Chelyabinsk – Dinamo Riga, game preview

Traktor Chelyabinsk
vs. Dinamo Riga

15.11.2008

Traktor Chelyabinsk after 23 games is placed 3rd in its Tarasov division and 9th in the overall standings – with 13 wins (1 after shootouts) and 10 loses (3 after SO, 1 after OT). The white bears (as the team also called due to the presence of this animal on the clubs logo) are well-known for their hockey style – rough, strength involving, sometimes rude; fights are also something you can see in Traktors’ performance. But the players are able not only to just wave fists, but also to show some really nice hockey. Traktors’ current position in the table is actually very good (and unexpected for many people). Thanks to Traktors’ accomplishments other teams have learned to respect this club, even fear it. The white bears are no longer counted as wash-outs, everybody takes the team seriously.

Huge credit in all of that belongs to Traktors’ head coach – Andrei Nazarov, a famous tough-guy in the past (it’s clear, why Traktor plays such kind of hockey, isn’t it? :-) ). Nazarov is quite a young trainer and considered as one of the most perspective ones in Russia. Nazarov took over Traktor in season 06/07, where the team finished 17th. In the last season they stopped at 14th place (out of 20).

It’s worth mentioning, that last season, January 2008, a massive, team-on-team, goalie-on-goalie fight happened, where the players of Traktor and Ak Bars Kazan made a world record on penalty minutes, gotten by two teams in one match – 403 (!!). :-)

Traktors’ this season leaders are: forwards – Andrei Nikolishin with 16 points (4 goals + 12 assists), Evgeniy Skachkov – 14 pts. (8+6), Aleksey Zavarukhin – 14 (6+8), also Evgeniy Galkin (6+7) and Oleg Kvasha (5+7); between defensemen – Oleg Piganovich – 11 pts. (2+9), Jan Platil – 7 (3+4), as well as Andre Lakosh and Aleksandr Sazonov.
Traktors’ main goalkeeper is Daniil Alistratov – 8 wins (1 shootout), 6 looses; 42 goals against, 88.4 % save percentage. The second goaltender is Sergey Mylnikov.

It’s going to be a hard game for Dinamo. Riga had the last game with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, which it loose 3:5. Traktor, on the other hand, played its last match with Khimik Voskresensk – a 3:1 win. Its, probably, not right to compare teams, especially when they have such a large difference in class like Metallurg and Khimik, but I assume that Dinamo had a more difficult game than Traktor. That’s why I think, it’s going to be a little harder for Riga, even though it’s very difficult to say, which club will win. Nevertheless, our team has chances in getting points and I don’t live out the possibility of an over-time or shootouts.

Metallurg Mg - Dinamo Riga, game review

Metallurg Magnitogorsk VS Dinamo Riga
13.11.2008
5-3

Dinamo was weakened for the game. Our leaders Marcel Hossa and Matt Ellison were out due to a disqualification for the fights in the last game. Dinamo’s new goalkeeper, Martin Prusek took the place in the net.

The game in the first period was rather equal, although Riga was a little better. Dinamo had more shots on goal - 11:8, more goal-scoring moments, but Metallurg looked quite withered. Dinamo Riga managed to score in power-play two times, after Aleksandrs Nizivijs shot in the beginning and Girts Ankipans in the middle of the period. So Riga’s lead after the first 20 minutes was appropriate.

Metallurg began the second period the same. Only in the fifth minute Magnitka earned a power-play, which they, however, used – a ricochet on Zavarukhin’s hook and 1:2. After some minutes Mikelis Redlihs passed the puck from behind the net on his partner, who shoted, Proskuryakov didn’t catch the puck and Lauris Darzins got it in to the empty net! But the goal wasn’t counted… The referee went to watch the video, where he saw, there was a penalty from Dinamo’s side (high-sticking against Kaigorodoff) before scoring. Darzinsh got a 5+20 and the team was left short-handed for five minutes. The first two minutes Riga defended nicely, but then Igor Mirnoff tied the score! And after just one minute and 7 seconds Kudrna, after Pruseck had beat off the puck, gave his team the lead. After such a nightmare, Dinamo got a power-play, which was necessarily for at least getting some rest. Metallurg was its self again, so after – the home team dictated their own rules, attacking almost all the time (the shots after this period were 15:5). On the periods last minute Blinovs got a minor penalty for hooking. It was good for Dinamo, that the siren rang – Metallurg was close to score.

Dinamo was still SH in the beginning of the third period, but Magnitka didn’t do anything. Riga went on attacking, Magnitogorsk – counter-attacking. Dinamo didn’t have many chances to score, but on the eighth minute they got PP and after 57 seconds Metallurg was left with only three players. Riga had to score and did – Hartigan with an awesome wrist shot in the top of the net!! But a few minutes later Platonoff after a shot from behind the net once again gave his team the lead. An unnecessary goal, but it’s hard to judge Prusek, because it’s almost impossible to react, when goals are scored from this position. Once again Riga needed to score. But the team didn’t, Metallurg, however, did – on a counter-attack Rolineck passed on Yaroslav Kudrna, who wasn’t covered at all, but ought have been – two of Dinamo’s defensemen were right near him. Riga got a penalty after this goal, so the winner of the match was practically clear.

Despite the defeat, I think, our team did quite well. Metallurg is a high-class team and it’s not easy playing against it. Riga, however, showed a good game and once again proved that it can battle with teams, which are at a higher level.

Dinamo’s next game is with Traktor on November 15th.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk - Dinamo Riga 5:3 (0:2, 3:0, 2:1)
Goals: 2:36 Nizivijs (PP) 0:1, 13:55 Ankipans (Novak, PP) 0:2, 26:20 Zavaruhins (Selujanov, PP) 1:2, 29:51 Mirnov (Chistov, PP) 2:2, 30:58 Kudrna (Rolinek, PP) 3:2, 49:58 Hartigans(PP) 3:3, 51:41 Platonov (Varlamov) 4:3, 55:18 Kudrna (Rolinek, Marek) 5:3

Penalties: 14 – 35

Without Ellison and Hossa today.

As Dinamo's official home page stated, today will not participate Matt Ellison and Marcel Hossa, well bad new for the Dinamo Riga, our strongest scoring line is now broken. Well at least we will see what Latvians can do on the ice, as I know today will play Juris Stals in place of Ellison or Hossa, I don't know who will play in place of Aleksejs Sirokovs, maybe Sergejs Pecura, we will find out soon.

Update

Marcel Hossa received 3 match disqualification for last games penalty against Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk player, where Hossa received 25 minute penalty. KHL disciplinary staff decided to put such a harsh penalty because Marcel Hossa already earlyer this season received such a harsh penalty.

Matt Ellison received 1 match disqualification for because a fight also playing against Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk.

Sirokovs left back at home

Today in the morning Dinamo Riga has left Riga, to participate in 3 away games, against Metallurg Magnitogorsk (13.11), Traktor Chelyabinsk (15.11), Salavat Yulaev Ufa (17.11). As Dinamo Riga general manager stated - ''Aleksejs Sirokovs is left back home, because in last training he has suffered an minor injury, he will be back for the next home game.''. Some say that Sirokovs is overloaded and he needs an rest. Some say that he has an conflict with Julius Shupler, that is the posible reason why Rodrigo Lavins is now a team captain, Sirokovs is hoping to transfer to MVD, where head coach is Latvian national team coach Olegs Znaroks. As unrealible sorce says, there are many players not satisfied with their role in the team. The truth we will find out soon. Sirokovs plays a solid hockey this season, gaining 8 points with 2 goals and 6 assists in 22 games.

Metallurg Mg. - Dinamo Riga, game preview

Metallurg Magnitogorsk VS Dinamo Riga
13.11.2008

Metallurg Magnitogorsk is currently one of the top teams in the league, they are strong in all lines, hey are currently placed 6th with 10 Wins, 5 Overtieme Wins and 8 Loses averaging 2.86 goals for and 2.52 goals against in 23 games.Their top player currently is Jan Marek, who is also league leader in goals and points, with impressive 19 goals and 13 assists in 23 games, also notable players are defenceman Vitaly Atyushov , who has 15 points, forward Aleksey Kaigrodov with 18 points. They are usualy rotating their goaltenders both are equal players if you look at their stats. I think that their starting goalie against Dinamo Riga will be Ilja Proskuryako who seems a bit better then Belorussian Andrei Mezin this season.

Metallurg Magnitogorsk has won 3 times in Russian Superleague, last champions title was in season 2007, they have recently won European Champions Cup, earning them game in Victoria Cup against NHL's team New York Rangers, where they lost 3-4.

I hope that for this game Dinamo Riga players will come out fresh, because they had 2 weeks free time, only game were played against Liapajas Metalurs as an exhibition match, they have also viewed newest James Bond movie, maybe they will be inspired by it :). I predict that this game will be equal, only Metallurg seems as better side. Starting goalie in this game, in my opinion will be Sergejs Naumovs for Dinamo Riga. Well, I hope for all the best.

Martin Prusek has arived in Riga

Newly acquired 33 year old goaltender Martin Prusek has arrived in Riga. He told that he will do the best he can(Not a new sentence :) ) to win. And that he feels ok here, he stated that he has played in North America and Russia and with a new teams it is not s problem to fit in. He has played already this season against Dinamo Riga as a Spartak's goaltender, as he stated, he thinks that Dinamo Riga is a good team despite loss(1-5) against Spartak earlyer this season.

Stats for this season:
22 Games
3,00GAA(Goals against avarege)
87,9SA%(Save Percentige)

I think that he is a good replacement for Sergejs Naumovs who showed that he is still a good goalkeeper, but he(Prusek) will have to prove him self. I hope that management of Dinamo Riga has made right choice when they did not take Sperle, but took Prusek in his place, in my opinion Sperle was a solid future goaltender for Dinamo Riga. I hope for the best.

Rodrigo Lavins has been assigned as captain

Rodrigo Lavins has been assigned as captain changing Aleksejs Sirokovs. Rodrigo played as captain already in exhibition game against Leapajas Metalurgs, now he has been aproved as captain officialy by Dinamo Riga, he has been captain for last few years for Latvian national team and I am shure he will be also in Switzerland when there will be held World Championship for men.

He is a great guy, but he plays bad on the ice, in my opinion he is one of the weakest links in Dinamo Riga. I don't understand why this change has been needed, maybe because of upcoming WC? As head coach stated: ''Blinovs said to me that him playing as a captain affects his game, so we needed a new captain.''.

I hope this will make some change in the team, after this long losing strake, anyway good luck Lavins as a new captain!
